The Big Cat Sanctuary has partnered with Countrystyle recycling, a local waste management company. After several years of working with Countrystyle for its waste management, the new partnership has been agreed to drive waste segregation and recycling further as the Sanctuary plans for a more sustainable future. We recognise the detrimental affect that high levels of plastic waste have on our oceans and the wider environment. Over 80% of ocean plastic comes from land-based sources, with an estimated 8 million metric tons of plastics entering the oceans every year from land- based waste. The Big Cat Sanctuary’s team will work hard to reduce the amount of plastic used across our site, whether that be items in our gift shop and restaurant or those used by our animal care team.
At The Big Cat Sanctuary we are making commitments to more responsible purchasing. This includes all sections of our site ranging from our onsite giftshop and kitchen to our cleaning and cat team. By carrying out an audit of items used and sold onsite we are able to better understand where we can make changes and become more responsible consumers. The Big Cat Sanctuary is committed to supporting a shift in demand from unsustainable to certified sustainable palm oil (CSPO), avoiding a blanket boycott. Unsustainable palm oil production is now one of the leading global threats to wildlife in palm oil producing areas, resulting in rapid deforestation and biodiversity loss across many tropical countries, particularly in South East Asia. 193 Critically Endangered, Endangered and Vulnerable species now have palm oil production as one of their main threats, including the beautiful Sumatran tiger. The Big Cat Sanctuary is working hard to reduce its carbon footprint. By collaborating with local programmes we aim to make big changes onsite to help us on our path towards becoming carbon neutral. As a conservation charity we understand the need to set an example to our supporters and guests, and hope we can educate them to make positive changes. With climate change listed as a leading threat to some of the most threatened species we look after at the sanctuary, we understand that now is the time to take action!
Although focussed on conserving wild cat species around the world, we at The Big Cat sanctuary think it is important to also remember the wildlife right on our doorstep! The State of Nature 2019 report reveals that 41% of UK species studied have declined. It is important for us to ensure that The Big Cat Sanctuary is making changes to help support our local wildlife. The Big Cat Sanctuary is pleased to announce the newest addition to the family, Kuda, a Sri Lankan Rusty Spotted Cat. Kuda is 5 years old and was born on the 30th of April 2018 at Hamerton Zoo Park. He joined us on Tuesday 13th February after a smooth 3-hour journey from Hamerton.
